Family Photography St. John's Newfoundland

Extended family photos are always fun to do. :)

Start with the matriarch and patriarch.

First image is scanned print showing film edges. Others are scanned negatives. All Tri-x 35mm except the square images which are 120 tri-x Holga.

So many cameras. St. John's Newfoundland Photographer

How many cameras do I bring on a session? Minimum 3. When you shoot film there are no photoshop filters to help you achieve the look you want. Different cameras have different personalities and produce very different results.

A sweet girl first with Holga + Tri-x @ 1600 and then with Bronica + Tri-x @ 800.

And to round it out 35mm with her sister.

Parents were shared in a prior post but here they again. I usually try and shoot a few frames with just the parents and in this case I was thrilled with the results. (Holga + Tri-x @800)

Sisters. St. John's Newfoundland Photographer

I've known these girls for many years so I was thrilled to get the call to photograph them.

Superstars, both of them. Really.

All photos tri-x pushed to 800. 35mm and 120 Bronica nad Holga.

A couple of Holga shots.

Family Photography - St. John's Newfoundland photographer

A family from away contacted me about a family session while staying in St. John's. We went to Signal Hill to find an incredibly cold and windy day. The good thing about Signal Hill is that in addition to the views there are many places to tuck away from the wind and when we did we had much happier kids. Flexibility when photographing children is an absolute requirement.

All the squares are made with Holga. I even shot some colour in my Holga. I'll put colour film in the Holga camera any time you ask nicely.

This next one was my favourite of the day.

Rhonda's Family

I have a friend named Rhonda. Her family was going to be all together in the same city at the same time so we thought it best to do a family portrait. It was a sunny Sunday in her mother's yard. I photographed the family, then the families within the families, and various other combinations.

I did some *regular* groups shots. Then I had a lot of fun with Holga. One of the great things about the Holga is that it's dead simple to do double exposures and/or overlapping exposures. For my amusement I did some overlapping exposure type group shots with Holga.  This was printed as 5"x14" and is really fun.

Family.

For comparisons sake, here is a Bronica shot of the same scene.

Another  with the same Holga technique. Siblings.

Here are the individual families.

Look at this little guy! He is a pro at just a couple of months old.

Then a few weeks later as luck would have it Rhonda's husband's family was all going to be together in the same city at the same time for the first time in a long time. I was delighted when asked to photograph that family as well. We headed up to Cape Spear where the objective was just the group all in the same photo looking lovely. We were tossed about by the wind, but that's half the fun of Cape Spear.

And for good measure a siblings group. Holga.

I have now met every single member of Rhonda's family, until more babies are born.

“Chaos often breeds life, while order breeds habit.” *

*Henry Adams.

If all my clients sat and smiled pretty on command - I would be bored to tears. All my images would look the same, thereby boring you to tears. I would never have to stretch myself and this whole photography gig would spiral into mediocrity.

Give me some fired up kids any day.  Keeps me on my toes and brings energy and life to the photos. The title quote was not about photography . . . but it very much applies.

No studio, no rules. Kids, chaos, coffee.

She was not sure. I was.

Holga cameras are toy cameras. Kids like toys. Kids play with toys.

This guy was a supermodel.

We had a lot of Holga fun. This is my kind of family photo.

When was the last time you had a nice photo of just the two of you?

Holga.

Holga. Last shot of the day.
